چکیده

Sir, What started as a clever talk title by Susumu Ohno (1) to describe non-protein-coding DNA (ncDNA) quickly became a ubiquitous phrase (“junk DNA”) causing substantial confusion and distraction from a more sophisticated and accurate apprecia tion of the majority of the human genome that does not encode for proteins. While much of the scientific community rejected the vernacular—with some prominent scholars calling the charac terization “ambiguous and even derogatory” (2)—the term per sisted widely, in concept and informally, in academic literature and popular media. The scientific intricacies of the many human omes (i.e., the genome, exome, transcriptome, and proteome) are relatively poorly understood by those outside the relevant disci plines, though those within the relevant disciplines cannot deny the importance of better understanding the molecular and cellular roles of ncDNA. While popular media are picking up on the gen eral scientific sentiment that ncDNA has some importance (see, e.g., [3]), there is considerable confusion about (i) what the

"Junk"DNA as a genetic decoy

It is well known [1, 2, 3] that in most species a large proportion of the genome does not appear to code genes or proteins, or even regulate coding DNA. This leads to the descriptive expression " junk DNA ". Naturally, it is possible that the hidden information in this DNA has simply escaped us so far; however that such sequences have high redundancy (they may, for example, be long repetitions ...

The unseen genome: gems among the junk.

The publication of the article " The Unseen Genome: Gems among the Junk " , by W.Wayt Gibbs (October 2003), may turn out to be a critical step in facing up to the possibility that almost the whole of every DNA strand in a cell is potentially-executable " code ". The original " junk " hypothesis – that only the sections of code that form a template for protein construction represent " valid " co...

Down with ncRNA! Long live fRNA and jRNA!

Noncoding RNA (ncRNA) and long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) are scientifically invalid terms because they define molecular entities according to properties they do not possess and functions they do not perform. Here, I suggest retiring these two terms. Instead, I suggest using an evolutionary classification of genomic function, in which every RNA molecule is classified as either"functional"or"junk' a...

Background and Objectives: There are high tendency among adolescence for consuming junk foods. The aim of this study was to predict the junk food consumption based on the theory of planned behavior among female student in Kermanshah, 2011. Material and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 207 female students studying in middle schools of Kermanshah were selected using multi stage samp...

Rubbish DNA: The functionless fraction of the human genome

Because genomes are products of natural processes rather than " intelligent design, " all genomes contain functional and nonfunctional parts. The fraction of the genome that has no biological function is called " rubbish DNA. " Rubbish DNA consists of " junk DNA, " i.e., the fraction of the genome on which selection does not operate, and " garbage DNA, " i.e., sequences that lower the fitness o...
